Weller / Peters & Reed
Cavalier
Jug
Circa 1900
This piece, known
as the Cavalier jug, was attributed to the Peters & Reed Company of
Zanesville, Ohio for a long time. Peters & Reed both worked for the
Weller Pottery before they started their own company. However, in
“Sanford’s Guide to Peters & Reed,” the author states “There is no
authentic documentation to support the Peters & Reed Pottery Company
producing the standard ware [which this piece is] . . . Robert Bettinger
recognized the maker of this line . . . by identifying the shapes as
shapes produced by . . . the Weller Pottery Company.” We’ll accept this
reference as accurate and call this a Weller piece. A close-up of the
design is pictured on p. 113 of Sanford’s book.
The Cavalier jug is
about 5 1/2” tall. The handle is on the top and the small spout is
located in front of the handle. The design is in pastel shades, mostly
yellow and pale green. The Cavalier appears twice, once on each side,
and the small spray of flowers is under the spout. The base is mostly
glazed, but a small patch of red clay shows at one place, along with
three unglazed kiln marks. This is a really nice piece for anyone who
likes the American art pottery of the 1900 period. It is in wonderful
condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs.
