Goss-Type Crested Ware
Puzzle Jug

From Kendal, England

This cute little piece of crested ware is a replica of an Old English puzzle jug that was (and maybe still is) in the South Kensington Museum in London. It is just 3 inches tall. One side has the crest of the town of Kendal. The other side says, ìTry how to drink and not to spill And prove the utmost of thy skill.î The fingers had to be held in such a way that they covered holes that would let the liquid out too soon. Crested ware pieces were popular souvenir items in England in the late 1800’s and early 1900s. There are not chips, cracks or crazing on this piece.
